코로는 프랑스 파리 출생으로
처음에는 상업에 종사하였으나
1822년부터 미샤롱과 베르탱에게
사사하여 그림을 공부하였습니다...

25년부터 2년간 동경하던 이탈리아에 유학,
자연과 고전작품을 스승으로 한
정확한 색가(色價)에 의한 섬세한 화풍을 발전시켜,
27년 '나르니다리' 로서 살롱에 등장하였습니다...

그 후는 프랑스에 살면서
파리 교외의 바르비종을 비롯한
여러 곳을 찾아다니면서
많은 뛰어난 풍경화를 남겼습니다...

코로의 작품은
은회색의 부드러운 채조(彩調)를 쓰면서
우아한 정경을 드높여 주어, 단순한 풍경에도
시와 음악을 부여할 수 있었다는 점이
큰 특색입니다...

동시에 착실한 관찰자로서
자연을 감싸주는 대기와 광선의 효과에도 민감하여,
빛의 처리면에서 훗날
인상파화가의 선구자적 존재였습니다...
