무모한 시도
어느 오후, 열정적인 골퍼인 젊은 남자가 여가를 보내고 있었다. 남자가 티에서 1타를 치려고 할 때 한 노인이 혼자서 골프를 치고 있는데 같이 쳐도 되냐고 물었다. 거절할 수 없어 남자는 승낙했다. 그들이 9번째 홀에 이르렀을 때 남자는 다음 샷이 어렵게 됐다는 것을 알게 되었다. 남자가 칠 공 바로 앞, 공과 그린 사이에 커다란 소나무가 있었던 것이다. 어떻게 칠 지를 몇 분간 논의하던 끝에 노인이 말했다. “음, 내가 자네 나이였을 때, 나는 저 나무를 바로 넘기는 샷을 날렸었지.” 그 말에 자극을 받은 남자는 힘껏 스윙을 하여 공을 날렸다. 그러나 공은 나무 줄기를 맞고 겨우 1피트 앞에 떨어졌다. 노인이 말했다. “물론, 내가 자네 나이였을 때에는 저 나무가 3피트 높이 밖에 안됐지.” A young man who was also an avid golfer had some free time one afternoon. When they reached the 9th hole and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball - directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot the old man finally said, "You know, when I was your age I used to hit the ball right over that tree." With that challenge, the young man swung hard and hit the ball up, but it hit the tree trunk and landed barely a foot from the original spot. The old man then said, "Of course, when I was your age that pine tree was only 3 feet tall." |
